121 Chinese Diesel-Hybrid Buses Dispatched for Karachi: Sindh Transport Minister in 2022

Syed Awais Qadir Shah, Sindh Transport Minister, announced yesterday that China had delivered the first batch of diesel-hybrid buses to Karachi. He added that a fleet of 121 buses, divided into two shipments, has left Chinese shores and will arrive soon.

These buses will be part of an intra-city public transportation system that will operate on 15 routes across six districts. Shah went on to say that the bus service will begin in May 2022, according to the transport ministry.

Original Plans

Sindh government plans to procure 250 diesel-hybrid buses for its People’s Bus Service project. The transport ministry will initially launch this service in Karachi.

The ministry has procured these buses from Higer Bus Company, which claims to have tested them for this project. The initial plan was for the buses to arrive in March, but their procurement faced a delay.

These buses will travel 29.5 kilometres between Model Colony and Tower, as well as a 33-kilometer route between Nagan Chowrangi and Singer Chowrangi at first. This service will be available in Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Hyderabad, according to the ministry.
