Pakistan and China Deliberate on Science and Technology Projects Via CPEC in 2022

The second meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Science and Technology, which is part of the CPEC’s Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC), was held via video link to discuss science and technology cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Humaira Ahmed, Federal Secretary for the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Dai Gang, Director-General of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology’s International Cooperation Department.

The JWG meeting stated that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners. They will work together to deepen cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) and provide sci-tech support for the development of CPEC. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of STI cooperation as a key pillar for both countries’ social and economic development.

The CPEC Authority’s Executive Director praised the progress of the CPEC projects and expressed hope that the discussions at today’s meeting would result in the start of some projects in the field of science and technology. The JWG recognized the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the HEC for their efforts in establishing the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences at Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad.

Furthermore, it lauded the achievements of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in STEM education, the China-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor, people-to-people exchanges, and science and technology cooperation. It also congratulated the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and the Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST) on the progress of the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for mutual engineering recognition.

The JWG decided to support the Special Technology Zone Authority (STZA) in the development of Special Technology Zones across Pakistan, as well as other programs related to the development of the knowledge ecosystem, such as policymaker training and capacity building on STI, incubation programs, knowledge exchange events, and so on.
