President Calls for Increased Outreach of Federal Tax Ombudsman

President Dr. Arif Alvi on Thursday called for increased outreach by the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) to raise awareness about the FTO’s role in providing prompt justice for complaints alleging mismanagement by customs and tax authorities.

He made these remarks while speaking with FTO Dr. Asif Mahmood Jah, who had called on him at Aiwan-e-Sadr. He added that the FTO is doing an outstanding job by providing traders and people in business with prompt relief from government officials’ highhandedness.

Dr. Jah presented the Annual Report-2021, which highlighted the tax Mohtasib’s performance and achievements. He stated that 2,816 new complaints were filed with the FTO in 2021, with 333 carryover cases from previous years also being processed. In 2021, 2,867 of these cases were resolved, and 88.14 percent of the decisions were implemented by the relevant authorities.

The Ombudsman has also decided to refund claims totaling Rs. 8,499.11 million, which the FBR has paid to aggrieved taxpayers.

He stated that the FTO had begun informal resolution of complaints in priority cases under Section 33 of the FTO Ordinance, 2000 to assist taxpayers and resolve complaints as quickly as possible.

The FTO also stated that the Ombudsman provided an Rs. Six hundred million Sales Tax refund to over 9,000 vehicle buyers by declaring the collection of Sales Tax above 12.5 percent from complainants to be illegal.

Dr. Jah informed the President that the FTO has set up facilitation desks at international airports in Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta, Lahore, and Peshawar, as well as land border stations in Chaman and Torkham, to assist traders and business people.

He also informed the President that, with the assistance of trade bodies and associations, the FTO is conducting seminars and awareness sessions across the country to raise awareness about the FTO’s role in providing prompt and cost-effective justice against tax authorities maladministration.

President Alvi expressed his satisfaction with the FTO’s performance in providing prompt justice to complainants in remote country areas.
