Shan Masood Breaks Multiple Records in County Championship in 2022

Shan Masood of Pakistan has become the second Asian batter to score back-to-back double centuries in the county championship. Nawab Iftikharuddin was the first, scoring 231 and 224 for Worcestershire in 1933.

The in-form Derbyshire cricketer produced another scintillating performance against Leicestershire, scoring 219 off 268 deliveries to become the first Pakistani to score two consecutive double centuries in the county championship.

Masood made history last week when he scored the highest individual score by a Pakistani opener in the County Championship. Masood’s 239-run total surpassed that of former legendary batter Zaheer Abbas, who scored 230 against Kent in 1976.

He became the second Pakistani batter to score back-to-back double centuries in first-class cricket with his recent 219-ball knock. Arshad Parvez had previously scored 243 against Balochistan and 236 against MCB in the BCCP Patron’s Trophy in 1978.

Masood is currently the leading run-scorer in the ongoing county championship season, having scored 611 runs in just four innings. This year, he was also the top third batter in the Pakistan Super League, scoring 478 runs in 12 innings.

Shan was added to the national squad for a red-ball leg of the series against Australia after a two-year absence, but he did not get the chance because Imam-ul-Haq performed admirably throughout the series.

Several Pakistani players are currently competing in the County Championship this summer and are in excellent form. Earlier this week, Hasan Ali stunned Gloucestershire with a brilliant first-day spell of 6/47.
