Twitter Bans Misleading Climate Change Propaganda Ads in 2022

Twitter has launched a new campaign to combat misleading advertisements that “contradict the scientific consensus on climate change.”

Twitter stated in an official blog post:

We believe that climate denial should not be monetised on Twitter, and that misleading advertisement should not detract from important discussions about the climate crisis.

The post also stated that its content selection decisions would be influenced by ‘authoritative sources,’ such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Twitter clarified:

We recognise that false information about climate change can jeopardise efforts to protect the planet. We’ll have more to say about our efforts to add reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations taking place on Twitter in the coming months.

The company stated that it intends to share more information about its plan to “add reliable, authoritative context,” as they have become an important need in recent years. The platform confirmed that public discussion of climate change has increased by more than 150 per cent since 2021.

The latest announcement from the microblogging platform is part of its long-term strategy to combat climate change lies and fake news. Other companies have also implemented and committed to similar policies to varying degrees.

Twitter urged its users to join the conversation about climate change, stating:

We all have a role to play in addressing this urgent global crisis. There are numerous ways to get involved, ranging from volunteering with a local environmental organisation to joining a Twitter Space with ecological experts to learning more about protecting our planet.
